Bennet Board series race 1

Saturday saw the first of the series of 3 Bennett Board races take place at Portreath. The Bideford Bay team didn’t get the expected 6ft waves to deal with but they did have what Emma Phillips of Surf Life Saving Great Britain described as “our toughest course yet”. The 1.5, “M-shaped” course looked nearer 3Km by the time the stiff left to right wind had moved the course bouys around! Taking part were:

David Miller – 6th in the Nipper boys
Olivia Sayer – 12th in the Nipper girls
Rachel Coles – 6th in the Nipper girls
Holly Coles – 20th in the Nipper girls

Francesca Sayer – the youngest in the whole field taking part in her first ever board series – what a fantastic effort on the day

Once again well done to all the competitors and thank you to Portreath SLSC and SLSGB for putting on the event as well as Bennett for sponsoring the races

Thanks to the parents that made it possibe for the children to compete

Summer training resumes this week with the Youths on Wednesday evening and the Nippers on Sunday

Nationals weekend 2011

The long winter of stillwater training culminated this weekend with the National Nippers and Youth stillwater events taking place at the Cardiff International pool, or at the Pwll Rhyngwladol Caerdydd as the Welsh would say.
Before we get down to the nitty gritty firstly a massive thanks to everyone involved in the competition, especially team manager of both the Nipper and Youth team Paul Tobin and Mr time keeper himself Jeff Spencer who spent something in the region of 20hrs on poolside over the two days. Thanks also to Paul Coles, Stan Pyle and Mr.Chavasse for their efforts. And finally a massive thanks to all the parents that came along and gave their all in support of the kids.

After the 4:30am departure time hopes were high for a good day with the nippers and we weren't disappointed. After a mega effort from all of the competitors and a huge haul of medals we finished an amazing fifth out of 17 teams! The top five placings are below,

Woolacombe SLSC 1559 points
Portreath SLSC 1254 points
St.Ives SLSC 1181 points
Saunton SLSC 942.25 points
BIDEFORD BAY SLSC 922 points

Sunday morning started early again with the added bonus of the clocks changing to leave us all with an hour less in bed. Never the less the twelve strong youth team all arrived on time (we all know how hard that is for teenagers!) for the eight a.m warm-up. The standard at the contest was very high this year and for many of our competitors it was their first time of competing at a national level. Undeterred by this everyone put in a top notch performance and the day was thoroughly enjoyed by all. At the time of going to press there were no results available for the youths but they'll be posted as soon as they become available.

Once again well done to everybody for a fantastic weekend and thanks to the team at SLSGB for organising the event.
One last quick thanks to everyone that has been helping out at the training session this winter as all your hard work is paying off!

Bideford Bay at the Devon youth championships 2011

A massive well done is deserved to all that took part in the youth champs today at Barnstaple. A team of 19 took part under the expert management of Paul Tobin. For some it was their first experience of still water competition and everyone put in a great display of grit and determination. We hope to carry the momentum from this weekend on with us to the National still water championships that are to be held in Cardiff at the end of March. Thanks to all the parents involved and the usual suspects, Sonia, Adam, Sandra and Rachel for making it happen. And a special thanks to Paul for taking on the task of team manager which is no easy feat.

We hope that this blog can become a usual source of information for members alongside email's to keep you all up to date with the goings on within the club. If there's anything you'd like to see here drop Luke an email at parky300@hotmail.com and we'll see what we can do.

Once again well done to all the competitors and we'll see you all at training on Saturday
